COMMERCIAL LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHER LEEDS

Creating an organic feel to lifestyle photography whilst ensuring some control in terms of exactly the details the images capture is a great challenge for a photographer. Part of my work involves working with the subjects of the photography, making them feel relaxed so I can capture a natural feel that feels like a real shot into subjects lives.

Part of this approach can involve a photojournalist style of work, allowing subjects to get involved in an activity without being too aware of the camera. Naturally, sometimes more precision is required of activity and subject to make sure a product or an element of the shot is more prominent and this requires a little more choreography and planning.

Here’s a photo taken from a shoot at Bramley Baths, where I was mostly a fly on the wall allowing the subject be involved in their activity as they typically would and feel this benefits the end product.

For commercial lifestyle work, it’s important that this still retains some spontaneous qualities, those seeing the material, whether in a magazine or advertisement, need to get a sense that they’re getting a snapshot of the lifestyle of the subjects and this of course doesn’t happen if the photo looks contrived or unnatural. This is all part of selling the reality of the situation and telling credible story of what’s going on in the shot.

Some of the examples above are from some lifestyle shots I took on a sunny day in Barcelona. These are some shots which play with the intense sunshine from the day, capturing the action of Apple the dog. The use of light in both interior and exterior shoots is a central part of making the images appealing and desirable, which is at the heart of commercial lifestyle shoots.
